A European Affair at Cheval, Mumbai

On the occasion of its second anniversary, Cheval, Kalaghoda launched their new authentic European menu. Chef Brian has specially designed the new menu to suit and cater the guests who are looking for something innovative and appealing to the palate, when it comes to European cuisine. Cheval believes in understanding the needs of their guests and hence tried to innovate their new menu, keeping the preferences of the consumers in mind.

With minimal wooden furniture and décor that adds a rustic touch to the place, Cheval scores high on ambience. Cheval lets you enjoy a very charming evening with some wonderful European cuisine and classic drinks. The bar area has high bar stools where you can enjoy your favourite tipple. The place is spread across a huge area with couple seating options, large group tables and even private parties going on simultaneously. The brick walls add a raw and rustic charm to the place, along with wired lamps that lit the place were quite a sight!

Food & Drinks

The new menu has starters like Bravia potatoes, slow cooked pulled pork buns, tender lamb balls, etc, along with Cheval’s signature salad like the roasted duck salad and a range of sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, etc. They also have some innovative fusion dishes like multigrain crepe laal maath and beetroot along with a smoked tomato fondue, pan-seared John Dory on a bed of coriander and kaffir lime risotto with chimichurri sauce, etc. The dessert options include Chocolate Napolean layered with cream anglaise finished with kalhua sauce, etc. We opted for the homemade sorbet in a white chocolate nest, served crème anglaise, which looked as sumptuous as it tasted.

The drinks menu is quite interesting with quirky cocktail names which coax one to try them out. Cheval’s Affogato (vodka and herb liqueur with lime sorbet), daiquiri and Sazerac (bourbon, bitters and sugar syrup stiired in an absinthe washed glass!) that we tried were all well-made and very interesting. My favourite among the cocktails was ‘It’s about Thyme’ – a cocktail with sparkling brut, yellow charteuse, and pressed lemon, wherein they had experimented with thyme to add some fresh greeny touch to the drink. The classic Spanish sangria I tasted there was one of the best ones in Mumbai. Apart from the cocktails, the bar had a range of wines and spirits. Wines from India, Spain, Italy, Germany, Australia and Chile are stocked at Cheval.

The elaborate new menu at Cheval is quite a delight and a must try if you enjoy some good old European gourmet experience.

A weekend at The Deltin, Daman

Nothing beats the beauty of a long drive in Maharashtra during monsoons. So, we drove to Daman in the rains and however cliché it may sound, the journey was indeed as wonderful as the destination. Our destination being the only five-star property in the Union Territory – The Deltin.

The Deltin Group which operates casinos in Goa recently broadened its avenues with a new property in Daman. The property is set to house a 60000 Sq ft live gaming casino, making it the biggest on land in India.

The Property

The recently launched casino-hotel in Daman is a 176-room luxury resort – The Deltin is fast becoming a desired destination for a quick weekend getaway as it offers easy drive-in access from major cities in the west, including Mumbai, Pune, Surat, etc.

Spread over 10-acre with 176-rooms, four gourmet restaurants, three bars, 8,000 sq. feet of high-end retail space and a luxury spa, The Deltin provides over 29,000 sqft MICE space capable of hosting large weddings, corporate events and conferences. The banqueting division offers a one-stop shop for large and small group events, ranging from 20  to 2000 persons, all equipped with a range of amenities that are seamlessly integrated into the event flow.

Krsna Mehta’s casino inspired wall art adorn the walls of the hotel throughout. All the paintings and designs; from the customized chandelier in the lobby to the cushions and sofas, have an underlying casino theme. The whole property is embellished with colourful and designer clubs, spades, diamonds and hearts, giving it a very quirky look.

The Deltin has three beautiful pools – a general huge one, a VIP pool area and a smaller pool, more suited for children. With a number of relaxing treatments, the spa at the Deltin is one of the most luxurious and soothing experiences.

The property also has a state-of-the-art gym and a gaming zone for its guests to unwind while they are on a stay-cation and we sure did that well! J

Food & Beverages

The hotel boasts of multiple restaurants and bars with a variety of cuisines and specialty dishes & drinks to cater to the gastronomical desires of its guests. The Juice Bar with a range of health drinks and fresh juices is a favourite breakfast spot. Also, there is The Cake Shop for pleasing your sweet tooth.

Vegas RestaurantVegas is the multi-cuisine restaurant and coffee shop at The Deltin. Their continental and Indian menu is quite extensive and the breakfast menu also offers a range of English and Indian food options along with juices, tea, coffee, as well as some special breakfast cocktails.

The Emperor: This restaurant specialises in Tangra style Chinese cuisine and truly looks like the divine den of an Emperor. The restaurant serves green tea as a welcoming drink, which almost won us over. The food is authentic Tangra style, which can be enjoyed with some Indian wine labels. The restaurant is only open for dinner. The ambience is quiet and the spherical cabins are beautifully lit wherein guests can savour a private meal.

Whiskys BarWhiskys: Whiskys is the lobby bar with an array of cocktails and infusions with whisky. There was a Tapas bar set up in the lounge area. The Whiskys bar, with its innovative and creative cocktails and concoctions with a twist add to the unique charm of the place. We tried a number of cocktails and unusual whisky infusions here. From the slightly tangy Appletini to the completely novel Beer Mojito and Beer Sangria, Whiskys didn’t fail to surprise us. The Long Island Iced Tea was a delight. We tried their specialty cocktails like, Lemongrass Martini, Chilly Martini, Muffin cocktail, etc. The one thing common in most of the cocktails was that the key ingredient was whisky (infused with some herb or spice)

Spending a weekend at this hotel in the sleepy town of Daman was quite a rejuvenating experience, away from the clamour of a buzzing city. I feel the five-star property might help in changing Daman’s image from a ‘cheap booze’ place to a high-end party joint. The hotel is already a favourite destination wedding choice for people in Surat, Ahmedabad and other adjoining cities of Gujarat. With the biggest land casino opening here, the hotel will certainly draw crowds from all over the country.
